Description

Experience an immersive view!

The Iwokrama Canopy Walkway is a series of suspension bridges and decks in the Iwokrama Forest of Guyana, offering a unique opportunity to view the Amazonian rainforest from the canopy level. The walkway is situated up to 30 meters (98 feet) high and is an excellent location for birdwatching and wildlife viewing

  • It is located in the heart of Guyana's Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve. It is one of the most pristine rainforests in the world.
  • It is approximately 300km (190 mi) south of Georgetown and 130km (80 mi) north of Lethem on the Brazilian border.
  • The nearest airstrips are Fair View Village adjacent to Iwokrama River Lodge, Surama Village and Annai Village (Rock View Lodge).

What to expect at the walkway

  • A unique perspective: The 154-meter-long walkway provides an immersive view of the jungle's mid-level canopy that is impossible to experience from the forest floor.
  • Wildlife viewing: Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot a wide variety of birds, such as scarlet macaws, green aracaris, and toucanettes. Red howler monkeys may also be seen or heard. You may also spot epiphytes like orchids and bromeliads.
  • The lodge: The nearby Atta Rainforest Lodge is the base for the walkway, offering meals and comfortable accommodations. The lodge is operated by a partnership that includes the local Surama Village, and many of the guides and staff are from the local Amerindian community.
  • Hiking trails: You can explore the surrounding rainforest on foot with a guide, who can point out different species of trees and flora. In addition to the walkway, nearby trails offer other opportunities for exploration

How to get there

The Iwokrama Canopy Walkway is located deep in the Iwokrama Rainforest Reserve, approximately 300 km south of Guyana's capital city, Georgetown. Getting there requires some planning:

  • By air and road: This is the quickest option. You can take a domestic flight from Georgetown to the airstrip at Annai or Fairview Village, and from there, arrange a 4x4 vehicle with a tour operator for the final leg to the walkway.
  • Overland via tour: A longer but more scenic option is traveling with a tour company in a 4x4 vehicle. The drive from Georgetown is long (6–9 hours depending on road conditions) and rugged. The road passes through the interior, including a crossing of the Essequibo River via a barge.
  • By bus: For budget-conscious travelers, public minibuses travel from Georgetown to the Kurupukari Crossing on the Essequibo River, where you can be met by staff from Atta Lodge. This option can involve overnight travel.
